What makes a bird a bird?
Feathers come in an amazing variety of colours and shapes. They are not just pretty, they are something which marks a creature as a bird.
Birds’ beaks and bills are all different. Their shape suits the food they like to eat. You can work out the bird’s usual habitat by looking at its beak.
Birds feet are perfectly adapted for their habitat and lifestyle. They walk on tiptoe and most birds hide their knees under their feathers.
All birds lay eggs with hard shells but all eggs are not the same. The scientific study of eggs is called oology.
Just like feathers, birds’ eyes come in an incredible range of colours. They can see UV light; something we can’t do.
