Birds in art and as icons

We have a fascination with birds. It may be that they are free to soar through the air and so appeal to our imaginations. We love their colour, variety and quirky natures. Often we create bird images in paintings, sculpture and icons. We use them on teatowels and on t-shirts, cushion covers and stamps, jewellery and logos. We have sayings and proverbs, myths and legends and strange superstitions involving our feathered friends. We write about them in poems and give them key roles in our books and movies. Towns and cities claim them as mascots and many countries have national birds. New Zealanders call themselves kiwis and the kiwi is our national bird.
